Norway is arguably one of the best places to see the northern lights in the world. More specifically, the city of Tromso in northern Norway. It is situated 350 kilometers (217 miles) inside the arctic circle. For around a month every year during December and January, the sun never rises above the horizon. In Norway, the northern lights as visible most frequently in late autumn and winter to early spring. Furthermore, the best months are October, February and March. Even though it is sometimes possible to view the northern lights from all over Norway, it is definitely advisable to make your way north, as daylight hours become lesser and you are physically closer to the display. Avoid any lit up places as they will only reduce your experience.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that you will see the lights on any given day. Their appearance is completely dependent on nature, so you should definitely allow a few days in case they aren’t in sight on your first or second night. Remember to be patient.
